By Fiona Czerniawska The day they turned on the Christmas tree lights at Rockefeller Center, I found myself trapped in a cab on W 49th Street wondering why on earth the driver had chosen that particular route. Although a couple of hours ahead of the actual lighting, streets were cordoned off and fizzing with excited families; the traffic had slowed to a jerky crawl. Police were everywhere, giving me – an out-of-towner – a rare opportunity to observe New York’s Finest at close quarters.

The GCC consulting market grew by 20% between 2011 and 2012 and is now worth about $1.9bn*. That makes it larger than the consulting markets of both Spain ($1.5bn) and Italy ($1.4bn). In fact, on its current trajectory, it will be bigger than the (far healthier) Nordic consulting market by the end of 2015. But could it be even bigger?

By Edward Haigh I've written somewhere in the region of 150,000 words about the consulting market in the last three months. That's, like, a couple of books-worth or something. I'm the Barbara Cartland of the consulting industry. Actually, let's not go any further with that idea. Anyway, it's only a rough guess but I'd say that about 149,998 of those words have been about pragmatic, hard-nosed, results-focused, transformative, implementative consulting. The other two words were about blue-sky, hot-air, results-agnostic consulting. And they were, if I remember rightly, 'nothing' and 'doing'.

Following an evening at the Special Forces Club in London recently, I mentioned to a friend - by way of trying to sound coolly underwhelmed by the experience - that I hadn't been terribly impressed with their egg-mayonnaise vol-au-vents. So when I was invited back a few weeks later my heart skipped a beat. Had my friend betrayed my confidence? Were my vol-au-vent-eating days about to come to abrupt end at the hands of trained operatives whose 'Death, and how to dispense it (2012)' manual had been updated to include a section on 'termination by hors d'oeuvres'?

Enough about me. Let’s talk about you…. What do you think about me? I love that joke. It is the perfect metaphor for so many things. And it’s something that I refer to frequently when talking to clients. The fact is, people are obsessed with themselves. OK, maybe that’s a bit strong. But it is fair to say that if you can make what you’re communicating about me, and not just about some random “other” who may or may not be like me, I am far more likely to listen to you, really hear you, understand you and, perhaps most importantly, remember you (and your message.)
